Here's another example of mostly code generated graphics from another jam game of mine, NewspapeRTS: Īll the characters are drawn via code, meaning I can make them as fat as I want, change their heights, skin colour and what have you. But fear not, you're not exactly tied to super low res pixels either. Granted, you probably can't generate everything via code, and some things will always be easier to animate by hand. And particles, because I do love them oh-so-much. There are no spritesheets or any sort of other animation action going on, just some math to make the character lean and flail his head when running around, as well as make the lollipops wobble. Most of my graphics nowadays are code-generated so I can customise whatever I wish, however I wish, without ever having to touch a single frame of an animation by hand.įor example, the title screen of my candyjam game Sugar Coat: Įverything in that picture except the little candy sprite is code-generated, and even the candies are randomly coloured via code. Just because most programmer art is a red box sliding around the stage, doesn't mean it all has to be bad. So I eventually took 'programmer art' to the next level. (This was back in the day before we had readily available stuff like Spine to do all that for us.) I started off as a hobbyist animator, but eventually grew sick and tired of doing it because it's so much work drawing every single frame, and having to redo 200 frames just to change a shirt colour or whatever. I also have done very 'simple' art in the past, and that works for a lot of people too. You have to push yourself through it though. I still would rather work with an actual artist, but the fact that I have been through everything that I would expect a partner artist to do not only makes me feel more confident, but I think it'll make me a stronger team member in the future. Seriously, it just takes practice and time. I also 'made' all the sounds except the music, using bfxr. I would say that I probably spend ~10 hours of learning, messing around, drawing, and animating to create everything you see in there. It's rough, sure, but I'm also very proud of it for my first 'real' art attempt. I'm not claiming that I created anything magnificent, but my end result can be seen here: Almost all the art I made myself, stumbling through it (there are a few tiles that I still need to replace). I very loosely make a pixel-art version of my character and began to animate it using GraphicsGale. After only a couple of days, I managed to create a character I thought would be OK to add to my game and semi-easy to animate. When the time came that I knew I would need some of my own art, I decided to try drawing with a pencil for 10 or more minutes every day, just doodles. I started programming a basic platformer game, and while I made the game, I just used Mario sprites. I just want some insight from those more experienced than I about how they would overcome these issues in my place. This post isn't a 'WHERE CAN I FREE GAME ARTS' post. What seems like a great idea at first often leads to me convincing myself that I would be the only one who ever wanted to play it. I'm also paranoid that I'm wasting my time. Once I realize that the game will never look as good as it could potentially play, I lose interest. Another huge obstacle for me has always been motivation. Whenever I try to recruit the help of my artistic friends, things will go along smoothly for a while, but my friends quickly tire of working on so many sprites. The simple fact of my entire game dev experience thus far is that I cannot art. However, most of my largest roadblocks come from trying to acquire those resources. But given the proper resources I can usually get the job done. I won't pretend like I'm an excellent programmer. I've hit one of the roadblocks that ruin my projects every time. I'll be making great progress, just coding away, and then suddenly BAM. I've made very small ones along the way, but the temptation to do more often takes over. I'm a hobbyist programmer, and I've always been attracted to making games.
